Mission Team Report for Church Meeting January 2009

Since the AGM in October, we have run a successful Mission Day, when we invited representatives from the missions we support to come and meet us and give information about their Mission . The purpose of the day was to enable people from our congregation to learn more about these missions, to which WSUC gives financial support: we hope that by so doing, people will be motivated to pray in a more informed way. This was the first such event and we were pleased by the numbers of people who came, and by the positive response. We have tried to keep a balance between local, national and international missions; we were therefore delighted that we had representatives from each category! Our special thanks go to Michaela Turpin, who took the main responsibility to make this event happen and to Jill Townsend, who devised a mission passport for the children, which helped them to find out more about the missions we support.

In January we started our “Mission of the Month”: so watch out for the magazine articles and the special section of the Missions notice board: again we hope this will increase prayer and other support.
As a team we are responsible for keeping in touch with, and allocating money from the Mission Fund to applicants, who are mainly gap-year students. This is exciting and challenging: it is great to hear of their plans as well as their experiences when they return. Please pray for the young people who are currently away on projects: Nakitta Stocker, who is working in a Church in Stockton-on-Tees, and Hazel Tyler in with Youth with a Mission (YWAM). We also remember Louisa Taylor , preparing to go to South Africa with Oasis Trust from April till August, Emily Moffat who will be working in India also from April until August with Oasis Trust, and Hannah Thomson going to Rwanda with Tearfund from March till August. They have been active with fund-raising events, as a result of which we enjoyed eating cakes bought at their market stall and the Quiz Night just before Christmas.
We are looking forward to the URC’s Commitment for Life Programme Co-ordinator, Linda Mead, coming to speak at the morning service on Sunday July 19: so make sure you will be there that day to learn more about the work of Commitment for Life.

Sadly Michaela Turpin has decided to withdraw from the team, due to increasing family commitments: we have really appreciated her support, especially the key role she played in organising the Missions event in November.
